Although the homeschooling laws in Massachusetts are not that great, there is usually no problem homeschooling in Sharon.

To homeschool here, you first submit a "letter of intent". Address it to Dr. Claire Jackson, Superintendent of Schools, 1 School Street, Sharon, MA 02067. The letter should say something like this:

Dr. Jackson:

We intend to homeschool our children, John and Mary, for the upcoming 2003-2004 school year. Please send the appropriate form.

Sincerely yours,

xxxxxxxx

Send this letter no later than June or early July to homeschool the following school year. If you want to start homeschooling during the school year, you have to wait for their approval before you can withdraw your child(ren).

The form that the superintendent's office provides is a page where you enter some boilerplate information. We use "daily logs" as our method of "evaluation." You add a description of your homeschooling program as an attachment. We usually send in about 6 pages, although others send more. We keep it general - we don't discuss hours to be spent on each subject. Mostly it is a list of materials that we use. Contact me if you want to see a sample proposal. The proposals have to be sent back to the Superintendent usually by the middle of August (in 2003, August 11).

If you want to, you can this Wiki.
